“I see God in every thread that I draw on the spinning wheel....the wheel represents the hope of the masses,“ was what the Mahatma had to say about khadi.
Sixty three years after his death, the khadi industry has reasons to be cheerful since the khadi market is growing at roughly 30 per cent.
Earlier, the LDF Government had imposed the use of khadi or handloom dhotis among government employees.

Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board secretary Sreekumaran said that Board staff wore only khadi clothes.
There has been a steady increase in the sales of products promoted by the board during the last fiscal, the sales turnover in the state touching a high of `27.33 crore.
The board has 220 sales outlets including mobile units. It employs over 700 regular staff, and provides livelihood to over 10,000 artisans.
Sreekumaran said that coarse rough khadi had undergone a tota change, both in texture and quality. The Board also sells a host of other products from starch to pickles to slippers to fur niture now.
“We promote khadi and also village-level prod ucts,“ says Sreekumaran The rebate that govern ment offers during festi val seasons, which goes up to 30 per cent, is a big attraction. Sreekumaran said that the benefits were passed on to the weavers and spinners According to him, khad doesn't need a celebrity brand ambassador since it already has a message from the Mahatma.
